| EDUC 200 - Foundations of Secondary Education with Pre-Practicum I |

A consideration of secondary education in the United States in its social, political, and economic contexts. The course deals with the origins of secondary schools in the United States, other agencies of education, and how the present secondary education structure has taken shape. Study of the US Constitution and the Massachusetts State Constitution are also integrated with course topics. Lectures, seminars and pre-practicum field experience include an analysis of the historical, philosophical, and social foundations of secondary education and of school organization and purpose in the context of middle and high schools. Consideration of contemporary issues is of major importance, including the roles of the American secondary school in a democratic, multicultural society. The course is intended to help students determine whether the teaching profession is suited to their individual interests and abilities. Note: This course requires a pre-practicum field placement of 36 hours. This course fulfills the Massachusetts state law requiring the study of the United States and Massachusetts Constitutions. This course is required for all students wishing to obtain a secondary education initial teaching license. Students cannot receive credit for both this course and for EDUC 110 Education in American Society, PreK-6.
Prerequisites: Sophomore or higher standing and permission of the department chair.
