| EASC 228 - Principles of Oceanography |

An expansive and quantitative examination of the ocean’s geology, chemistry, circulation, and biology. Specific topics include ocean basins; the origin and evolution of the chemistry of seawater; the physical dynamics of the sea including oceanic circulation, waves, and tides; tectonics of the oceanic lithosphere; geology of coastal areas; elementary marine ecology; and management practices for coastal and oceanic environments, with an emphasis on the implication of sea-level rise associated with global climate change. Extensive quantitative analysis and several field trips supplement lectures. This is an advanced introductory course designed for students majoring or minoring in Earth System Science. Note: Students may not receive credit in the Earth Systems Science major for EASC 118 Our Blue Planet: An Introduction to Oceanography after receiving credit for EASC 228 Principles of Oceanography.
Prerequisite: MATH 123 Introduction to Functions or a satisfactory score on the mathematics placement examination.
