Designed to introduce students to the field of literary study and research. This course focuses on the work of James Baldwin, long considered one of the twentieth century’s greatest writers and a ground-breaking thinker on race and racism in America. Through close readings, analytical writings, and an exploration of research methods, students should leave this course with a concrete grasp of a few of the major works of American literature and their cultural/historical contexts, as well as a sense of current critical approaches and debates in the field.
