ENVS 218 - Energy Science and Policy: The Pursuit of Sustainability |
An exploration of the scientific principles of thermodynamics, and the ways in which physical limits intersect with economic and political considerations in order to shape energy policy, both in the United States and elsewhere. The course investigates the nature of energy and its historical contexts, including sources of energy, their costs and benefits, and the by-products of energy extraction and use. Special attention is given to the costs of energy production and use that are borne disproportionally by under-represented populations. Emerging alternative energies and their political, economic, and social potentials are also examined.
