| EASC 296 - On Thin Ice: Climate Change and the Cryosphere |

An exploration of the cryosphere: the frozen water domain, consisting of glaciers, ice sheets, sea ice, and seasonal snow packs. The cryosphere is undergoing rapid melting due to climate change, with consequences for Earth’s energy balance and global ocean circulation. Students examine the role of the cryosphere in Earth’s climate history and current climate change, along with the physical properties, behavior and formation of ice, snow, glaciers, ice sheets and sea ice, as well as methods of observation and measurement. Students apply this knowledge to human societies’ relationships with the cryosphere – biophysical, cultural and economic – and the impact of the great melt – with reference to the past, present, and possible futures of the frozen realm of Planet Earth.
Prerequisite: MATH 123 Introduction to Functions or permission of the instructor.
