HSTY 383 - Making of the Modern Middle East |
An examination of political, social, and cultural developments in the Middle East since circa 1500 Common Era (CE). The course covers the rise and fall of the Ottoman and Iranian imperial dynasties, the impact of European imperialism in the region, and modern national, constitutional, and Islamic movements. Students explore historical perspectives on topics that arise frequently in contemporary discussions about the Middle East, including the role of religion in politics and society, the role of gender, and encounters between the Middle East and other regions.
Prerequisite: Sophomore standing and one 100-level history course, or permission of instructor.
