| HSTY 382 - Empires in Collision: Southeastern Europe, 1683 to the Present |

A study of the Balkan-Anatolian unit since 1683. Emphasis is placed upon the emergence of the Balkan national states, the evolution of native cultures, problems of ethnicity, class, and gender, the involvement of such great powers as Austria and Russia in the region, and the profound changes since World War II. Note: Students cannot be given for both this course and 32.382 The Modern Balkan World.
Prerequisite: Sophomore standing and one 100-level history course, or permission of instructor.
