SOCI 333 - Society, Mental Health, and the Individual |
A sociological exploration of the relationship between society, mental health, and the individual. The course examines how certain behaviors and attributes become perceived as mental health issues, the history and current status of medical knowledge and treatment, social attitudes toward those diagnosed with psychiatric disorders, the experience of illness from the patient’s perspective, and the legal and economic issues associated with the treatment of psychiatric illness.
Prerequisites: Sophomore standing and any course in Anthropology, Sociology, or Criminology; or permission of the instructor.
