SOCI 255 - LGBTQ Communities in the United States |
A sociological examination of the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people in the United States. Students explore how social and cultural contexts impact LGBTQ identities, the development of LGBTQ communities, the LGBTQ rights movement, the influence of cultural norms, social stigmas, and institutional policies on LGBTQ communities, as well as current issues facing LGBTQ communities. Emphasis is placed on theory, research, and the intersections of race, class, gender, and sexuality within LGBTQ communities.
Prerequisites: One (1) of the following: ANTH 161 Cultural Anthropology, ANTH 253 Gender Across Cultures, ANTH 258 Critical Approaches to Men and Masculinities, SOCI 101 Introduction to Sociology, SOCI 130 Social Problems, or SOCI 218 Women in Society; or permission of instructor.
