BIOL 218 - Introduction to Bioinformatics |
Designed to introduce the principles and practical approaches of bioinformatics and to enable students to solve biological problems with computational tools in real life. The learning experience features an integration of lectures, hands-on exercises, and group research projects. This course covers learning and research resources in bioinformatics and genomics, advances in sequencing technologies, subsequent analytic tools, structural informatics, phylogenetics, and comparative genomics. Students are required to enroll in the corresponding laboratory (3 hours).
Corequisite: BIOL 218L Introduction to Bioinformatics Lab.
Prerequisites: A college level biology course with lab, or CSCI 156 Python Programming for Applications,or ENVS 202 Data Analysis for Scientists or STAA 127 Statistics for the Social Science, or STAT 157 Probability and Statistics; or permission of the instructor.
