ECED 931 - Social & Emotional Learning & Inclusive Practices - Students with Disabilities Grades PreK-2 w/FE I
An introduction to special education with a focus on social emotional learning and inclusive practices that early childhood and elementary educators use to support children with disabilities in general education settings. Students explore the concept of disability and how it is socially constructed and understood in cultural contexts. Students study special education laws and procedures, disability categories, eligibility determination, and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Students also study research-based methods such as universal design for learning (UDL) and multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) for supporting all learners. The course also includes an exploration of educational technology and assistive technology tools. Field experiences allow the students to observe and interview professionals who provide special education services. Note: This course requires a field experience of 18 hours. Prerequisites: EDIL 910 Education Foundations and EDIL 920 Learning and Human Development. Corequisite: ECED 921 Foundations of Literacy Development and Assessment Practices in Grades PreK-2 with Field Experience I.
