ECED 921 - Foundations of Literacy Development & Assessment Practices in Grades PreK-2 with Field Experience I
An introduction to developmentally appropriate teaching practices in early childhood with an emphasis on language acquisition and development in young children. Through a study of early reading, writing, and literature, instructional methods are taught, applied, and evaluated, using educational technology as appropriate. Students develop teaching strategies for beginning and fluent readers in critical literacy skills, such as phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Student learn to observe and record the behavior of young children and apply knowledge of developmental stages and characteristics of young children (ages 3 - 8) to an integrated language arts curriculum. Students also begin their study of characteristics of high-incidence and low-incidence disabilities. The course includes ways to create a classroom environment which recognizes the racial, cultural, and linguistic diversity in young children and supports their learning. Note: Child Development Lab or Early Childhood Center experience or an appropriate alternative placement for three (3) hours per week is required. Prerequisites: EDIL 910 Education Foundations and EDIL 920 Learning and Human Development. Corequisite: ECED 931 Social and Emotional Learning and Inclusive Practices for Students with Disabilities PreK-2 with Field Experience I.
