CHEM 300 - Principles of Biochemistry |
A study of the principles of biochemistry including the chemistry of carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, amino acids and proteins. Topics covered include the structure and function of biological compounds, energy transformation, bioenergetics, enzyme function and kinetics and the principles of metabolic regulation. Emphasis is placed on the chemistry of macronutrients, vitamins and coenzymes. The underlying theme of this course is to introduce the concept of homeostasis and how it relates to intermediary metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and nitrogen-containing materials such as amino acids, proteins and related compounds. Note: This course is designed to serve the needs of students whose program requires only CHEM 207 Organic Chemistry I. Note: Students may not receive credit for both this course and CHEM 301 Biochemistry I. Students are required to enroll in the corresponding laboratory (4 hours).
Prerequisites: BIOL 130 Principles of Biology or BIOL 161 Introduction to Cell and Molecular Biology; and completion of CHEM 207 Organic Chemistry I with a minimum grade of C- (1.70).
