An introduction to the philosophical, societal, political, economic, and cultural facets of modern
China and Japan. The main emphasis is on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Special
attention is given to the rise of Communism in China and the economic rebuilding of Japan
since 1945. Prerequisite: 32.154 Western Civilization since the Renaissance, or 32.155 The Comparative History of World Civilizations, or an Asian area studies course.
